Event Details

Celebrating the relationship between music and poetry, the 2012 iteration of the international composition competition and workshop, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (Forme Uniche della Coninuita nello Spazio), is set to take place in Adelaide in less than a week's time, culminating in a free concert at Elder Hall on November 20.

The event will bring together some of the most interesting young talents in the world of contemporary composition from Italy, Great Britain, Japan, Korea, Iran and Australia.

The eight finalists – Ewan Campbell, Matteo Casula, Kaku Kazue, Mari Ohno, Sam Messer, Sandro Mungianu, Sebastian Phlox, Iran Sanadzadeh – were selected from a field of more than sixty applicants by distinguished jury members, Carlo Forlivesi (Conservatorio G.P. Palestrina, Cagliari, Italy), Daniel Zanesi (Groupe des Recherches Musicales, Paris) and Stephen Whittington (Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide).

Provided with a selection of texts by Italian and Australian poets, each of the finalists has composed a new work, taking inspiration from one of the poems. In Adelaide, the finalists will have the opportunity to workshop their compositions in sessions led by Forlivesi and Whittington, over an intense five-day period.

Adelaide audiences will be the first to hear these works by eight of the world's up-and-coming composers in a special showcase concert performed by Soundstream Collective, the new music ensemble-in-residence at the University of Adelaide, with Peter Handsworth (clarinet), Sidonie Henbest (voice), Elizabeth Layton (violin) and Soundstream Artistic Director Gabriella Smart (piano).
