Event Details

Join Sydney Children's Choir and members of Gondwana National Choirs in their spectacular annual Christmas concert, Voices of Angels.

On the Western Front at Christmas in 1914, a series of extraordinary events took place when soldiers from opposing sides spontaneously laid down their arms, exchanged gifts and sang Christmas carols. Known as the Christmas Truce, this momentary pause in hostilities was short-lived as the respective commanding authorities, safely ensconced some 30 km behind the battle lines, ordered an immediate return to the slaughter.

Voices of Angels commemorates the centenary of the Christmas Truce with the world premiere of Miracles by legendary Australian composer Ross Edwards. In Miracles, Edwards has contrasted a sublime new setting for children’s voices of the mediaeval Christmas text Quem Vidistis (where the shepherds and animals witness the miracle of the newborn in the manger) with fragments of 'O Tannenbaum', one of the carols sung during the Truce, which is sung by young men close to the age of the youngest soldiers in the trenches. Surrounding Miracles in the program are carols in French, German and English that were sung by soldiers at the Western Front, while the second part of the evening celebrates peace on earth with new and traditional carols performed by over 200 young voices.

Gondwana Choirs Artistic Director and Founder Lyn Williams OAM directs the combined forces of Sydney Children’s Choir and members of the Gondwana National Choirs in the musical highlight of Sydney’s Christmas season. Sydney Children's Choir is proudly celebrating 25 years in 2014.

Featured non-Australian music: Quem Vidistis, O Tannenbaum
