Join us for a night of unique Australian music with some of Sydney’s best improvising musicians.

8.00 pm: Carl St Jacques is one of Sydney’s most creative and open-minded viola players. In his unique solo shows, he explores a myriad of styles such as folk, jazz, and free improvisation, combining his sound with voice and loop pedal creating an original and exciting hybrid of sound worlds. Miami-born, Carl has international classical training including at Indiana University and Verbier in Switzerland. He plays with Sydney Symphony Orchestra and has held positions Miami Symphony, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet and Southwest Florida Symphony as well as many chamber groups and has performed around the world in over 20 countries. He also performs regularly with a wide range of Sydney-based groups ensembles such as Miriam Lieberman, Tangalo, George Dukas and the d strings (Greek and classical fusion), Ephemera Ensemble.

Yulugi is a fresh collaboration between Gumaroy Newman, an Indigenous song man, and didjeridu player descending from the Gamilaroi and Wakka Wakka nations, and Keyna Wilkins, an NSW-based composer and musician (piano, flute). Yulugi is a dialogue across cultures, inspired by the Australian landscape and animals, often accompanied by stunning projected Australian landscape images of indigenous photographer Wayne Quillam. ‘Yulugi’ means play, dance or have fun in Gamilaroi, one of the Northern NSW Indigenous languages. The sonic scapes created are a melting pot of indigenous and western sounds and textures and inspired by the Australian landscape and animals, this duo explores spiritual awakening through improvised music.

The duo features Keyna Wilkins, a pioneering flutist, pianist and composer and one of three national finalists in the APRA/AMCOS Art Music Awards for Individual Excellence 2018, and Gumaroy Newman, is an in-demand didgeridoo player who has performed all over the world in indigenous ceremonies and concerts alike including performing with Shane Howard. Stylistically broad, this duo will take you on a journey into the heart of Australia with dream-like sequences alongside landscape depictions and animal mimicry and echoes of tribal lores, drawing on a myriad of musical influences, to create a unique and authentic soundscape of Australia. The duo formed early 2019 and have numerous successful shows around Sydney including opening the Australian Flute Festival at Sydney Conservatorium in July. Performances in 2020 include Melbourne Recital Centre on 29 May.
