"The end result wasn’t just cross-cultural, but also cross-artform....and immersive, new contemporary Australian art music." Cultural Omnivore Yulugi is a fresh collaboration between Gumaroy Newman, an Indigenous song man and didjeridu player descending from the Gamilaroi and Wakka Wakka nations, and Keyna Wilkins, a NSW-based composer and musician (piano, flute). Yulugi is a dialogue across cultures, inspired by the Australian landscape and animals, and accompanied by stunning projected Australian landscape images of indigenous photographer Wayne Quillam. 'Yulugi' means play, dance or have fun in Gamilaroi, one of the Northern NSW Indigenous languages. The sonic scapes created are a melting pot of indigenous and western sounds and textures, and inspired by the Australian landscape and animals, this duo explores spiritual awakening through improvised music. The duo features Keyna Wilkins, a pioneering flutist, pianist and composer and one of three national finalists in the APRA/AMCOS Art Music Awards for Individual Excellence 2018, and Gumaroy Newman, is an in-demand didgeridu player who has performed all over the world in indigenous ceremonies and concerts alike including performing with Shane Howard. Stylistically broad, this duo will will take you on a journey into the heart of Australia with dream-like sequences alongside landscape depictions and animal mimicry and echoes of tribal lores, drawing on a myriad of musical influences, to create a unique and authentic soundscape of Australia. www.yulugi.com https://www.facebook.com/yulugi/ The Tim Clarkson Trio is an intimate band with bite to their playing. They bring together elements of music often at odds with each other: their compositions can be rhythmically and melodically intricate, but in spite of this a sense of groove, melodicism and quirky playfulness permeates the saxophone, bass and drum interaction. With a sense of space and occasion, it is music that gets both the head and the heart, not one at expense of the other. Clarkson has a unique approach to saxophone-bass-drum trio which shares roles, often turning elements of the music on their head, with bass and drums often at the forefront. He brings to his music a wealth of experience with artists from George Benson and Cuban legend Elio Villafranca, through to Barney Mcall and Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra. Audiences are consistently delighted and surprised at the trio’s musical twists and turns, and the stories they weave. They have toured nationally and their release “Land of Free Men” has been heavily featured on ABC and community radio.
