Product details

A Drunken Fingerprint Across the Sky depicts a 'murmuration': a flock of starlings flying together, whirling and dancing across the sky. It is hypnotic to watch and somehow seems to be both random and choreographed. The title is taken from Richard Wilbur's poem Event - also a reflection on starlings flocking.

It is dedicated to my father and was written on his guitar. A passionate and knowledgeable bird-watcher, he showed me where the joy lies in simply being still and looking.

A Drunken Fingerprint Across the Sky was originally written for classical guitar (and composed on one) but can also be played on a steel-stringed guitar.

Notes in brackets are ghost notes and should be played very quietly. It is not important that all bracketed notes actually sound - the desired effect is a quiet, rhythmic echo of the previous chord.

Tablature is included in the score. Harmonics, ghost notes and slides are indicated in the tablature but all other performance details are provided in the five-line staff only. The tablature is used simply to show where any new notes should be played (tied notes are not shown).

Notes are to be allowed to let ring throughout with the sole exception at bar 141 (final quaver beat), where all strings are to be dampened.
