This 8 minute work represents a radical change from my usual way of structuring a piece, perhaps hinted at by the concept for my recent String Quartet 7, substitled 'Crisscross'.
Each of the seven performers introduces, in turn, an autonomous and, thereafter, exclusively used short "gesture", each bearing no relationship to any other. These seven "gestures" then develop an amalgam according to 8 pre-determined exclusively used means. Dynamics have been freely applied, but no other liberties permitted. My aim was to create a sense of considered arbitrariness, or coherence from incoherence.
The means for each "gesture" include: solos; repetitions; overlaps; transpositions; interruptions (in which case the particular "gesture", at next entry, to start its "gesture" from the beginning); changes of octave registration for the whole "gesture"; doubling note values for the whole "gesture"; halving note values for the whole "gesture".
