Performance of this work requires a backing audio CD that is available from the AMC.
Cathy Applegate was invited to compose this work
by academic sculptor, Lee Harrop for her "Still Lives"
collaborative project. This project was
concerned with geological core samples taken from deep within the
earth's crust. Lee engraved these samples creating exquisite
pieces of art. These samples inform us about the Earth's
composition, its distant past and highlight our place in the
greater scheme of things; the founding elements on Earth came
from processes that created our solar system around 4.5 billion
years ago. The work is in three movements.

The three movements that make up this work are all very different in style. The 1st movement, Star Dust is minimalist; the 2nd movement, Ancient Oceans is impressionist; and the 3rd movement is based on Counterpoint. Each movement has its own backing track with sounds that are mostly taken from nature.
