Birds Calling in Cloud Valley for piano was written for the Shadows and Silhouettes project, initiated by Diana Blom. In this project Australian composers were asked to respond to some aspect of Chinese culture in the creation of original piano works. For this piece I decided to use the songs of some birds found in China........ Birds Calling in Cloud Valley is pandiatonic - that is it uses only the white keys of the piano. It has some conventional modal aspects but also explores cluster-like chords.
