Performance Note
In typesetting this piece (21
years after it was written) for the sake of clarity it is worth
mentioning that the flutes and piccolos sub-divide in the
second movement in order to cover the bird-calls. This resulted
in 9 separate flute parts and 2 separate piccolo parts in
sections A - D. Piccolos are divided into two, flute 1 into 5
and flute 2 into 4 parts respectively. At section E they then
re-assemble into one piccolo part and two flute
parts.
The work is in two movements. The first
movement begins extroverted in character, becoming increasingly
introverted and abstract as the movement progresses. The level
of abstraction reached at the end of the first movement - where
soloists and ensemble are improvising - finds a new context at
the beginning of the second movement in teh form of bird song
(played by piccolo and flutes) which provides the setting for
an oboe solo. The clarinet introduces new bird song and the
piece once again takes on an extroverted character in terms of
tempo and the clarinet solo, but retains a sense of abstraction
in the accompaniment until the conclusion where the soloists
quote motifs from the beginning of the first movement by way of
contrast and reflection on the territory covered. The work was
written during January and February 2004 and has a duration of
approximately 13 to 15 minutes depending on the time taken for
the improvisatory sections. The work is dedicated to Simon
Reade, Renée Badcock and Derek Grice.
