Words from 'Crustacean rejoinder' by Kenneth Slessor, and 'Litany against everything' by Steve Wood.
Crustacean Rejoinder begins as a setting and musical retelling of Kenneth Slessor's poem of the same name for SATB choir, flute (doubling piccolo), clarinet (doubling tubular bells), percussion, violin, violoncello and piano. The poem concerns life in the 'rat race' (possibly a modern city). It is the from the point of view of someone who has built a hard shell to protect them from human contact. It is set in the form of an elaborate and highly abstracted blues. As most jazz and blues musicians will know, a blues is not always in the standard 12 bar pattern. In order to explore this notion I have set various sections in measures of 10,12 16 and 17 etc. As a response to Slessor's poem I conclude the piece with a setting of my own nihilistic little 'hymn' entitled, "Litany Against Everything".
