Essay for Orchestra no.2: Three Sonatas is a
work in a single movement of approximately 17 to 18 minutes
duration.
As the title suggests, this piece is in three main
sections with each utilising a sonata-like form. The outer
movements employ the developed binary form common to many
Scarlatti keyboard sonatas; two halves with each half repeated.
The central slow movement has a more classical-like sonata form, with a repeated exposition, a development and recapitulation. Between each of the main
sonatas is a shorter, more spontaneous section acting as an introductory prelude.
