Product details

This Fantasia No.7, on a theme of Liszt, was commissioned by the Liszt Society (Australia) for a new "Hexameron" to mark the centenary of Liszt's death. In writing it I strove to bring to mind the many facets of Liszt's genius: the extrovert bravura, the introvert probing, the late pieces, the Weinen Klagen Variations. The actual theme, given by the Liszt Society, is from the 14th Rhapsody (and the Hungarian Fantasy).
The commissioned work was intended to be a part of a new "Hexameron", but I have also made it an independent work by prefacing and concluding the piece with the beginning and end of Liszt's melody. In an independent performance I would like the prefatory seventeen bars of the Liszt theme played, as Liszt indicates, Allegro eroico. The work should then be concluded with the final nine bars of the Liszt theme, but this time played pianissimo, far away, like a distant Bach chorale.
