Product details
Commissioned by Dr Janet Widmer for the Beecroft Orchestra in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Dr Joanna Drimatis' as musical director, composer Margaret Brandman's Fiesta de la Luz (Festival of light) is a seven-minute through-composed work that begins with a dynamic rhythmic ostinato in E minor, setting a thrilling tone as it builds anticipation for the main Latin-American-inspired theme (hence the Spanish title). After an exploration of the motifs of this theme, a more energetic contrasting section, in the relative major key, lifts the mood. This section segues smoothly into the next segment, where the 'celebration' theme, performed by woodwinds and trumpets, is layered over an eighth-note melodic figure in the horns. A punchy rhythmic pattern, shared between lower and upper pizzicato strings, then provides a foundation for a lively interplay of earlier motifs, carried by woodwinds and brass. The tempo quickens once more, and this aspect along with a contrasting dramatic melody in G minor builds excitement. The joyous final section, is in the bright E Major tonality. The underlying rhythmic figure, based on the opening ostinato rhythm, supports the celebratory theme passed between the instruments. Excitement builds with the ever-increasing tempo, leading to a suspenseful pause that holds both the orchestra and audience in eager anticipation of the final celebratory chord!
