Product details

The word filigree usually refers to finely wrought metalwork of a decorative, ornamental nature. It occurred to me that it could also be used for the intricate patterns and repeated motifs that can be seen in the palaces, mosques and monuments of southern Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, India and Pakistan. From there, it was only a short step to apply the ideas of patterning, repetition and variation to the keyboard of the contemporary piano - hence the repeated, but varied treatment of the motifs, figures and phrases that constitute Filigrees 1. Towards the conclusion there is a simplification, a ritardando, a decrescendo, and the ending can be heard as the slowing down of two clocks or metronomes that, having run their course, subside and recede into a final silence.
