I started writing these pieces shortly after the birth of my first niece, Elsie, and completed them when my first nephew, Francis, was born. The pieces were both inspired by and are dedicated to them, and the 'first nights' are my imagining of the restlessness and wonder of the first few nights of life encountering the world.
