Product details
… for lost time is a dark and ambivalent work, acknowledging the cost of governmental responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, not least on the generation of young adults whose studies and social life have suffered lasting damage.
The first of the two movements, 'Lament …' , is an act of grieving for the time stolen by lockdowns, travel restrictions and the banishment of most personal interactions to the online realm. Relentlessly chiming bell chords mark the inevitable passage of time. Against this implacable framework, consorts of brass and woodwind instruments step forward in turn to articulate feelings of loss, frustration, even rage, building eventually to a powerful climax.
The second movement, 'Making up …' , follows without a break. All of a sudden, the bell sounds come to a halt, and things begin to move more freely, with instruments venturing out in ever-changing combinations. However, the prevailing mood is tentative and cautious. Even at its most energized, the music is not able to commit to all-out celebration; all it can manage is a clumsy dance, at best provisional, before dissolving once more into fragments and an unresolved ending. The world's journey through the pandemic is far from over.
