Product details
The title Freefall encapsulates my aim to create a visceral work, one of relentless momentum, as if powered by a limitless source of energy - thus the metaphor of gravity irresistibly pulling one towards the earth with an exhilarating acceleration.
The work commences with a brusquely descending three-note motif. This motif remains ubiquitous throughout most of the work, either as a unifying element within background textures, or as the generator of thematic material.
After a
brief orchestral flourish, a light, swirling cascade played of
flutes, harp, celesta and string harmonics suggest a hovering
weightlessness. This idea, with its fluid continuum and
static harmony, alternates throughout with sections that are in a
constant state of flux, presenting harsher harmonies, changing
metres, and violent contrasts in texture, instrumentation and
dynamics.
