Sheet Music: Score
German suite : for piano / Justin McKay.
by Justin McKay (2016)
Composed in 2016, German Suite is a companion piece to
French Suite of 2014. The title is not meant to describe
the style of the music so much as to acknowledge the Lutheran
hymn used as a cantus firmus in the third movement. The suite has
a wistful character, with a mixture of jazzy elements (for
instance, the rhythms and harmonies in the opening movement) and
colourful pianistic effects (the second movement exploits
virtually the entire range of the piano). There is also a nod to
strict counterpoint in places. The ornaments in the fourth
movement are, in modern style, executed before the beat; however,
care should be taken that they do not come too soon. The notation
in measure nine may be taken as a model for the realisation of
ornaments for the remainder of the piece. The repeat in the
second movement needs to be taken to maintain balance. The use of
the extreme registers may be thought of as depicting 'the heavens
and the earth'.
