Product details

The inspiration for this work may well have originated in the composer’s dual nationality as an Australian/Israeli.

In the context of a lecture I gave on the work: “Concerto for Chamber Orchestra”, at the University of Sydney, Professor Anne Boyd commented that the idea of distant horizons - the empty landscape that was so evident in Australian contemporary music - could also be found in association with my work, conceived as it was with another desert in the mind’s eye.

My composition teacher at the University of Tel Aviv, Professor Leon Schidlowsky would often say when discussing orchestral writing, “you need to put a horizon in the background for this melodic idea to stand out”. He was speaking also as a visual artist of long standing.

This work was conceived as the long, slow opening movement of a three movement work, modeled on the form of a Medieval mass. The long horizons are associated with the thematic melodic material of the work. The emphasis is on a process of evolution from individual sounds, through an unfolding of single intervallic combinations towards complex harmonic events arriving finally at an open fifth as the concluding gesture.
