Product details

"Kali's Laugh came as the result of seeing a place I had loved being consumed by bushfire. The pain of that loss seared me. I created four interconnected movements from Indian and Australian stories about the healing power of fire. Our western view is to fear fire, but Kali, the goddess of love and destruction, knows it can bring new life. I have since abridged this into a revised version (2018) with three movements (before, during and after)".

Inspired by Kali, the Indian god of love and destruction who joyously wields the regenerative power of fire.

As part of the mentorship in the Summers Night Project, Becky was asked to provide an 8-minute piece. She decided to revise her original Kali's Laugh for the new ensemble using flute and tenor saxophone to replace violin and clarinet in the original and to delete the final movement. The result is three movements - Before, During, After, dealing with physical and emotional bushfires in our lives. The workshop had a stress on improvisatory music and styles and this was seen as a counterpoint with fully notated naturalistic score.

The first movement is a tribute to Ross Edwards and his classic Australian bush joyous rapture.

Typeset edition.
