Performance Note:
The tempo crotchet = 131 and its quaver triplet subdivision relate to the septuplet quaver
subdivisions (minum = 56); similarly the tempo crotchet = 123 and its semi-quaver quintuplet subdivision
relate to the 11-tuplet semi-quaver subdivisions (likewise minum = 56). These tempi represent the
two different rhythmic streams running throughout the piece.

This single movement work for alto flute was written for a competition in Italy. My special thanks go to Carla Rees for kindly providing me with a CD ROM about the Kingma system alto flute. The multiphonics as well as quarter tones used throughout the piece correspond to the techniques available on this instrument. The title of the work is taken from a collection of short stories by Michael Ende: "Das Gefängnis der Freiheit" (The Prison of Freedom).
