The title Microsonata reflects the music's compact architecture. The first movement is both playful and agitated in nature as the violin and piano communicate in a variety of ways, culminating in a brief triumphant statement. The second movement is slow and ethereal, taking advantage of the violin's lyrical tone and richness as well as its filigree interaction with the piano. The final movement starts mysteriously before giving way to more joyous material derived from the first movement. The work ends in a rapturous fashion.
