Product details

This album explores the landscape of the soul. It covers a broad spectrum of emotions and moods, ranging from two lullabies to an elegy.

The Solo Violin Sonata is akin to a spring from which all subsequent pieces flow, directly or indirectly.

The first movement of the sonata opens with a progression of chords evoking an overture by Bach. A fast ascending scale based on the Phrygian mode leads to a passage based on fourth chords, giving the listener the feeling of entering a new world.

The second movement focuses on single-note melodies covering the full range of the instrument.

The third movement opens with fast passage work evocative of a movement from a Bach partita, projecting a dialogue of voices. A slow section follows, which in turn leads into a new fast section, no longer sounding like Bach. The finale closes on a tranquil note, resting on a quiet sustained open fifth.

All works on the album exhibit tangible vocal traits in keeping with the violin's unique singing quality, inspired by the sublime playing of Heifetz, Menuhin and Milstein.
