Ninsun is from a series of works which form the musical component of a collaboration for theatre. The solo is a meditative accompaniment to the baptism of Gilgamesh and the adoption of his companion, Enkidu, by Ninsunna, mother of Gilgamesh.
'The Epic of Gilgamesh' is an ancient Sumerian myth, believed to be the first literary text extant in written form. The story has been translated from cuneiform on clay tablets, many of which have been damaged or are untranslatable.
