To compose this work was, for me, a novel experience as I had not yet attempted a musical response to a novel, hence the title. The novel is 'PAINT' by John Honey. It provided various characters and situations as well as landscape settings sufficient to stimulate my music imagination. When my motivations involve extramusical subjects for investigation, such as narrative or landscape, I always emply dual critera in self judging ie. does the music sufficiently honour it's subject and does the music stand up in the abstract? Of these two criteria, I always place more value on the latter. Music cannot provide precise information extra to itself but it can evoke and suggest, mainly through it's capacity to express emotion.
I think the work provides some clues for those who have read 'PAINT', but they're only able to remain as such. If the piece has any appeal for those not familiar with the novel, then I would feel vindicated.
