This work was inspired by Indigenous stories of the Bunyip as well as how those stories became a part of my childhood in Australia. I have gratitude, respect and love for all those who created the spectre of the Bunyip in my imagination.
Old Fella Bunyip was inspired by a number of sources, including my childhood memories of bunyip stamps, as well as more recent research including the poem by Oodergoo Noonuccal 'The Bunyip', and the adoption of the bunyip into scary stories for young settlers. The call of the Eastern Bittern, known for it's characteristic "booming" was interpreted as the call of Bunyip, directly incorporated as a descending third (major/minor) in the second movement.
I encourage performers to speak the text that begins each movement as an introduction leading into each movement. The text is original, by Meredith Connie, and serves as a guide for interpreting the music.
