The structure of 'Passage to Klungkung' is based on moment form, which according to Jonathan Kramer is music that "consists of a succession of self-contained sections that do not relate to each other in any functionally implicative manner," or alternatively described as "self-contained entities, capable of standing on their own, yet in some sense belonging to the context of the composition." Klungkung is situated on the eastern side of the Indonesian island of Bali, and in April 28, 1908 became the last Balinese kingdom to fall to Dutch invaders. For two centuries prior to its Dutch colonization, the city had been the island's cultural and artistic centre, and today stands as a testament to the great legacy of the Gelgel Dynasty. 'Passage to Klungkung' uses a repeating 4/4 cengceng cymbal melodic motive to signify its programmatic arrival to the final fourth 'un poco più veloce' moment. (The cengceng cymbals although belonging to the 'indefinite-pitched metals' group of percussion instruments, do produce a pitch when played upside down.) The cengceng cymbal melodic motive, which mimics the Balinese gamelan ensemble, becomes the symbolism that acts as a trigger for the listener to reflect on Klungkung.
