Product details
In its original version - cello quartet - People of Sky and Wheat was commissioned by Caroline Hobbs and the Sydney Cello Quartet for the world premiere at their 2022 World Refugee Day concert in Sydney, Australia. The string orchestra version was commissioned by a consortium led by Tiffany Ou-Ponticelli and the Henry M. Gunn High School.
As a 6th generation Ukrainian, I just couldn't say no to the opportunity to musically share the story of my people and to pay musical homage to their resilience during this unprecedentedly challenging time for them. The colours on the Ukrainian flag represent clear, peaceful sky meeting at the horizon with endless fields of wheat. I decided to draw the inspiration from the flag for the title of the piece, and from Ukrainian folk music (the way I remember it and the way it is in my DNA) for the melodic and harmonic material of the piece.
This piece is a great introduction for the players and audiences alike to both folk and concert Ukrainian music and broader Eastern-European culture.
