"When I say artist I mean the man who is building things -
creating
molding the earth - whether it be the plains of the west - or the
iron ore of
Penn. It's all a big game of construction - some with a brush -
some with a
shovel - some choose a pen."
Jackson Pollock.
I have taken Pollock at his word and examine with pen his
"building"
with brush. His action paintings are fascinating to witness as
he
constructs his painting by throwing, dripping or dedicating paint
to his
canvas. I try to portray his gesture, the motion of the throw and
fall, the
drip of the paint. It is a musical examination of the layering of
these paint
processes of spidery forms which splurge, splay or even fall in
one accord
to the canvas. His action of painting is also a type of physical
dance,
without perspective, no above or below.
On a personal note, I remember as a child the outrage in the
press in
australia in 1972 as "Blue Poles" was purchased by the National
Gallery
of Australia for two million dollars.
Such a visionary acqusition for Australia but the public then
sadly
wasnt ready for him. That is not Art they cried. Perhaps my
fascination
for his work began back then.
