I've been trying to work out what 'home' means to me for a while now. In some earlier works of mine, "Glenro" and "Memories of Different Homes", I'd been reflecting on various moments of homesickness-one through a particularly bitter London winter, and the other when having to move back with my family in suburban Magandjin/Brisbane due to the global events of early 2020…
As best as I can describe in words: Home is warm, lived in, a little worn in a pleasant way; It's a thick heavy doona; It's my monstera sprouting a new leaf; It's the collection of oddly-shaped handmade ceramics that sit in various spots around the house, each collecting paperclips, pens, keys, dried flowers, boxes of matches; It's a kitchen full jars of things pickling and fermenting, a pantry with every spice imaginable, a stick of butter at room temperature ready to greet a slice of bread, a fruit/veg bowl overflowing with whatever looked nice at the grocer; It's a spot in the sun to sit with a tea (or a wine) for a few minutes or an hour.
Postcards is an exploration of five others' complex and varied relationships to home, setting texts by five artists each with different connections to Australia as their home, each invited to simply to reflect on what 'home' means to them.
