Product details

Revolución nueve or Revolution Nine was especially composed for the Modern Art Orchestra (Budapest, Hungary) as part of the 'ArtOfVirus (AOV)' project initiated by Hungarian composer, soloist and artistic director of the Modern Art Orchestra chamber orchestra Kornél Fekete-Kovács as an artistic response to the current Coronavirus Covid-19 global pandemic "affecting 213 countries and territories around the world and 2 international conveyances," which as of June 30 has accumulated 10,449,327 reported cases (including 5,705,458 recoveries) and 509,112 deaths, and "forced entire countries into lockdown mode, terrified citizens around the world, and triggered a financial-market meltdown."

According to Fekete-Kovács, "the purpose of the initiative is to use music to model the spread of a pandemic, the mutation of a virus, its latency, disappearance, and re-appearance, in other words: behaviour," adding that "AOV is a massive performance, a virtual work of art, which, as the pandemic ends, will exit its virtual space and will be performed in front of an audience in the traditional way." Fekete-Kovács begins the project with a nine-note adaptable melody or motive devoid of "rhythm, tonality, harmony or any other context" that he considers as the 'body' of the virus. This 'virus' motif is then sent to the following ten composers, who "create the first mutations of the body, and thus the first ten branches of the spread of the 'virus'": 1. Péter Eötvös (HU), 2. Mike Garson (USA), 3. Kuba Stankiewic (PL), 4. Brian Charette (USA), 5. Tony Grey (USA), 6. Gábor Cseke (HU), 7. Kristóf Bacsó (HU), 8. János Ávéd (HU), 9. Attila Korb (HU), 10. Gábor Subicz (HU). In essence, what the ten authors create is the "musical context behind the melody" and a "stylistic starting point for the branch established by their names." Every composer in the chain then "passes forward the music with a single monophonic melody" to two other composers that now "represent the spread and multiplication of the virus." The final result aims to be "a grand-scale musical composition, which, after summary, clarification and orchestration, will be presented in front of an audience as a ten-movement orchestral opus after the end of the pandemic. The premiere will be at an outdoor venue in Budapest, in collaboration with the Modern Art Orchestra ensemble and guest soloists." Revolución nueve was composed under the family tree of Hungarian composer, conductor and teacher Péter Eötvös (version code: #1) - the parent being Kornél Fekete-Kovács (version code: #0), who went on to nominate Gergely Vajda (version code: #1.1) and Samu Gryllus (version code: #1.2).
