Product details

I have had the privilege to compose multiple works now for anniversaries, reflecting not only on the their direct meaning and often celebration, but also the memory they are imbued with and how we choose to assign that meaning. One of the dearest people in my life, Molly Jenkins, did something that no one else I know in my generation is currently doing - commissioning a composer for a new work for their 25th birthday. It is novel and heartfelt, and an enormous task to reflect on a close friendship so early in its years, yet one so full and layered already after 8 of them. So, both being and first meeting as flautists, Molly and I wanted to dive into an iconic piece of our repertoire and see how new music could respond (even while loosely!) to it. We agreed on Dutilleux's 'Sonatine' for its intrigue and beauty, but also for the duality it represents. Ironically, Dutilleux's notoriously disliked this monumental work - rejecting it as his compositional voice while the rest of the (flautist) world embraced it.

In this, I identified the duality of the word 'sanction', how it is spelled both the same in English and French, and how its initial inception from 'law or decree' evolved to mean both 'to allow' and 'to punish'. To sanction something or someone, entirely depended on context - and while Dutilleux sanctioned his 'Sonatine' in disapproval, the flute and broader compositional community sanctioned it in acceptance. Musically, identifiable motifs from 'Sonatine' are used and blended in a new light amongst my own compositional style, with subtler harmonic dualities also at play and a pathway to greater affirmation at the work's close rather than its inspiration's showy style. This acts as a reminder that we tend to be too hard on ourselves, particularly even in our successes.
