Product details

'Seeds of Passion' represents a contemporary vision of 'Theme and Variations', and therefore does not adhere to traditional preconceptions of this compositional device. The theme, which has a melodic base of the North Indian 'Hindustani' scale of Shri raga, features an exhaustive amount of minor seconds bends, and explores bowing techniques, such as sul ponticello, sul tasto, col legno battuto and down-bow spiccato. Violoncello playing techniques are then explored further in 'Variation I', where on-the-string staccato, pizzicato, silent fingering, up-bow spiccato, scratch tones, bowing on the bridge and bowing the tailpiece are introduced. The variation presents the first phrase of the theme almost in its original form, but with one group of notes featuring an inversion of contour, and another, harmonization with triple stops. Also utilized is a characteristic South Indian 'Carnatic' rhythmic device, which divides for example, a sixteen-note phrase (excluding the final downbeat) into four groups of four notes, with the first group given a semi-quaver rhythm and the other three a triplet one (the initiation of the divisions additionally given an accent). This has the effect of propulsion towards the downbeat, creating the illusion of an accelerando. The rhythmic device is then repeated, but now utilizing four groups of five notes within a twenty-note phrase. 'Variation II' takes a different turn, and develops the theme with a relaxation of melodic density, a new tonal area, pizzicato quadruple stops, left-hand pizzicato, harmonics, and tremolo bowed at the tip and at the frog, while 'Variation III' uses another South Indian 'Carnatic' rhythmic device, where the pulse becomes subdivided into groupings of five, seven and then nine. 'Variation IV' then arrives at the subdivision of ten, before returning to the theme again.

The intention of this piece is not to present a western interpretation of North Indian 'Hindustani' music, but to utilize some of its theoretical ideologies, which will be disclosed in these opening notes. The system behind 'The Sixty-Six Srutis' or 'The Harmonic Division of the Octave' and the mode of Shri raga have been taken from the Benares musical tradition, as presented by Alain Daniélou in 'Introduction to the Study of Musical Scales' and 'The Ragas of Northern Indian Music'. Although strict rules generally apply to the use of Indian scales, none of these rules have been observed to any great degree in the composing of 'Seeds of Passion' for Amplified Violoncello. The cellist therefore may use the material provided for personal inspiration and as an essential guide to the direction of the piece.
