Shoreditch Grind is in four sections, following a 'fast-slow-fast-fast' scheme. The title is taken from a coffee shop in London with the same name that I had visited whilst on a choir tour. Whilst this music bears no programatic resemblance to the shop in question or to coffee for that matter, I found that the name was such an unusual conjunction of words that needed to be used as a title for a composition. Dialogue between the instruments, and within individual voices, both extended and fleeting, form the crux of this composition.
