First performance by New Philharmonia Orchestra, Sir Adrian Boult — 21 Mar 65. The Inaugural Concert of the Radio 3 Music Programme.

Prelude was commissioned by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as an introduction to Sir Frederick Ashton's ballet to this music.
