Product details

"so she moaned, and as she uttered her moans…" is a string quartet adapted from a large scale work that I have written called The Raw and the Cooked, which takes its title and structure from the major work of the same name by French anthropologist and father of Structuralism Claude Lévi-Strauss (1964). Lévi-Strauss uses musical forms and genres to structure his theory of mythology, through tracing myths from Amazonian Brazil.

"so she moaned" is taken from the final movement of Part Four (A Well-Tempered Astronomy) of The Raw and the Cooked, which Lévi-Strauss titles Chromatic Piece. The work relates to myths of the origins of poison and cultural differences. It is believed by one Amazonian society that humans use to have such little differentiation between them, that the gods were required to kill large amounts of people in order to create distinct social differences, which gave birth to culture. Lévi-Strauss implies an analogy of moving from the discontinuous (chromatic) to continuous (diatonic).

"In ancient times men knew nothing of disease, suffering, and death.

Men had been increasing to such an extent that Meri, the sun, was afraid.

So she moaned, and as she uttered her moans…"
