Sheet Music: ScoreSummer Music : for soprano recorder, alto recorder, baroque bassoon, harpsichord / Don Kay.by Don Kay (2007)

Product details
My aim in this one movement work is to evoke the languorous tranquillity of high summer. The recorders, baroque bassoon and harpsichord, normally associated with 18th century repertoire for which they were designed, posed an interesting challenge. Later instruments were developed to sustain longer notes capable of marked crescendos and diminuendos, enabling a greater expressive range. The language of music altered accordingly and something of the earlier decorative styles lost favour.
I decided to try a kind of decrotive style involving short motifs for the recorders, more sustained lines for the bassoon and generally quicker, flowing phrases for the harpsichord. The idea was to build a fabric of sound involving repetitions and small changes. A suggestion of a rustic dance, later in the piece, provides the only interference to the otherwise peaceful atmosphere.
