Product details
Tenebrae serves as an exploration of the musical implications of combinatoriality as an organizational determinant and presents a set of algorithmic variations of the melodic materials from Franz Liszt's chorales O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid and Ach Gott vom Himmel, sieh darein in juxtaposition with a text from the 1524 Lutheran chorale Ach Gott vom Himmel, sieh darein (Oh God from heaven, look therein). Martin Luther's Ach Gott vom Himmel, sieh darein paraphrases Psalm 12 (the twelfth psalm of the Book of Psalms, which proclaims that "God knows that even those who claim to be righteous and followers of God will use their words to malign us and attempt to harm us") and was published as one of eight songs in 1524 in the first Lutheran hymnal, the Achtliederbuch, which contained four songs by Luther, three by Speratus, and one by Justus Jonas.
