Product details

This work investigates the way in which rhythm articulates melody, taking these relationships to an extreme in which the fundamental nature of the original thematic material is finally obliterated. In The. Evidence serial techniques refined in previous pieces have been used to justify an ironic juxtaposition of thematic materials.

Not one of the three themes is original. The original work of the piece is the 'intermodulation' of one theme by the other. The themes: Bach's Musical Offering, Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms and Thelonius Monk's Evidence, have been treated with a form of ironic disdain. I was aiming for qualities of roughness, and the fracture of accepted norms and forms, which would express a break with the generally accepted values of the classical canon.

In a saxophone quartet the jazz influence could not go un-remarked. 'The. Evidence' pays homage to Thelonius Monk in the title where 'The.' is an abbreviation of his first name, and in the quotation of a jazz arrangement of 'Evidence' at the end of the work. The work is dedicated to the memory of the great Australian pianist and saxophonist Roger Frampton, who recalled the work of Monk in compositions such as And Zen Monk.
