Commissioned through Muso's Media for the 2000 New Zealand National Band Championships, The Highwayman is a musical depiction of the events in Alfred Noyes' poem of the same name. The poem has all the hallmarks of a romantic tragedy, with an un-named highwayman saved from ambush by his lover, who dies in the act of warning him. He later attempts revenge but is also killed, and the final words describe their ghosts meeting on moonlight winter nights.

The subtitle alludes to the concept of a 19th century melodrama. Over the top and highly emotional, sometimes weeping, sometimes angry. The language of the poem itself acts as a good starting point…
