Product details

The Muse - A Fairy Tale, is a kind of companion piece to "Three Penguin Summers", which immediately preceded it as the sixth of seven works John Honey and I have collaborated on thus far. Both works are in the form of sung narrative for baritone and instrumental ensemble. Both works, in their respective ways, therefore provided a composing genre quite new for me, and unusual generally. The Muse is approx. 25 minutes duration, in one non stop through-composed movement, whereas Three Penguin Summers is in three parts with pauses in between. Three Penguin Summers is based on true events. Muse, on the other hand, could be descriibed as an allegory. No character or place names are given and no specific times. It has an enigmatic, mysterious quality very different from Penguins. Trying to achieve the cumulative effect inherent in the text is what I enjoyed most in its composition, aiming for that common characteristic of all good fairy tales.
