They Shall Speak With Other Tongues : for Oboe, 2 English Horns and Tape / Constantine Koukias.
by Constantine Koukias (2019)
They Shall Speak With Other Tongues is inspired by the Pentecostal practice of a person usually in the midst of religious ecstasy or delirium, speaking out in an unknown or incomprehensible language. Some Pentecostal Christians interpret what the Bible says in Acts 10:46, concerning Cornelius and his household when they began to speak with tongues,
"For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God."
"In my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with other tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover."
Speaking in tongues also occurred in some ancient Greek religions. This phenomenon glossolalia, is a Greek compound of the words 'glossa', meaning 'tongue' or 'language,' and 'lalein', meaning 'to talk.' This work uses samples of recordings from 2010 from the American city of Champaign, Illinois, as the basis of the tape material.
