Drawing inspiration from the 16th-century Italian 'canzona' - a style of keyboard music featuring lively, often playful rhythms - This work gives the Baroque form a modern twist by scoring these pieces for descant recorder and toy piano: instruments often dismissed as being 'just for children' but here embraced as legitimate and welcome members of the art music family. This unique blend of the recorder's sweet purity with the quirky, off-kilter sound of the toy piano produces music full of joy and smiles, that surprises and delights in equal measure. The three movement reflect three different times of the day and use the instruments to different effects.
