Una per Ornette or One for Ornette was commissioned by Joel Brennan and Ken Murray (Melbourne, Australia) for performance at the 9th International Albanian Brass Festival 2024 (Tirana, Albania), and represents a Hommage à Ornette Coleman (1930-2015). The work serves as a tribute to American jazz saxophonist, trumpeter, violinist, and composer Ornette Coleman - "best known as a principal founder of the free jazz genre - a term derived from his 1960 album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation" - whose "pioneering works often abandoned the harmony-based composition, tonality, chord changes, and fixed rhythm found in earlier jazz idioms.
