A short work, Viola Song is full of well-being. Its four parts consist of an introduction, two statements of the viola's song and an extended coda. The work was commissioned by Musica Viva, in honour of the CEO of Mercantile Mutual, Rod Atfield, upon his retirement. It is one of five such works, written by different composers.
