Sheet Music: Score
Waiting for the sun / Sandra Milliken ; words by Melinda Smith.
by Sandra Milliken (2004)
I am always searching out poems of living writers, enquiring with writers clubs and checking out online sources. Through one online source I received a number of poems from Sydney writer Melinda Smith and I was absolutely enthralled by her poem Waiting for the Sun with its double meanings regarding the sundial's position.
The sustained opening section (sung on vowels only) depicts a sunrise as the light gradually enters and fills the sunken garden where the sundial is positioned. The contrasting moods of the piece reflect the emotions that the sundial experiences throughout the day, coming to a dramatic climax as the sun sets and the shadows lengthen. Finally, the light fades as the introductory ideas are heard in a retrograde progression.
