Wild Birds/Caged Birds comprises two movements based around birdcalls (transcribed and invented) treated in two quite different ways. The first movement, Wild Birds, uses free rhythms and a non metrical structure, as well as spatial effects - with the performers spread out around the performance space and on two occasions flocking together as a mob of corellas. Essentially the same musical motifs are used in Caged Birds but in a metrical and more structured (and tamed) way, with the perfomers close together.
