Product details
Wind Rose began life as an illustrated poem. The poet/artist, Magda Palmer, was working in Scotland at the time, and one day driving home over the moors, she was stopped by a child running wildly. He told her that he had found the wind trapped in a cave. This experience inspired the epic poem Wind Rose (www.maggiepalmer.biz/) and the song 'Highland Lament'.
Maggie moved to Darwin and approached Dr Martin Jarvis, the then conductor and artistic director of the DSO, about the possibility of having the work orchestrated.
Cathy Applegate was commissioned to compose the work and it was completed in 2006. Wind Rose may qualify for the broadest definition of opera. The work is made up of dramatic narration and song, and tells the story of the love between the Wind of our earth and a Paper Bird. It is a story with universal themes and incorporates many of the worlds important spiritual and philosophical ideas. It is a love story but also a universal fable for our time.
