Work Overview
Lion Love (Leo song) is a
contemporary art song set for mezzo-soprano
voice or baritone voice. It is the fifth song in Margaret Brandman's
'Cosmic Wheel of the
Zodiac' Song Cycle. The lyrics are
by astrologer and poet Benita Rainer who has artfully distilled
the individual characteristics of this star sign in her
text:
"It is in the nature of Leo, the
second fire sign, to be strong, brave and goal centered.
There is a lion, in the heart of everyone, young
or old, weak or strong."
To
suggest the strength of the lion, the resonant
key of C# minor was chosen. The opening lyrics for this song have
been set to vigorous rhythm with solid chordal harmony supporting
the melody. The contrasting sections with gentler lyrics have
been treated with a more melismatic approach. The final section
of the song begins strongly but becomes more mellow, ending with
an uplifting chord progression of an F# 6/9 chord to accompany
the lyrics "for true harmony."
