Work Overview
This piece is a tone poem based on Miriam Wei Wei Lo's poem of the same name which is part of a quartet of poems called Fruit in Season.
Miriam's poem "Eating Loquots in the Spring Rain" creates a fun and vibrant picture of her children devouring loquats, not on a sunny spring day, but on a joy-filled rainy one.
There are so many wondrous images and textures in this poem that it was difficult to choose just two as inspiration for the melodic themes. The first melodic theme is based on the opening line, "Ripe at last." It follows the natural intonation of the words while conveying the sense of a long period of anticipation finally reaching fulfilment. The second melodic theme is based on the image of falling, stammering rain. It is not one of melancholy, but one of happiness.
As always, I am thankful to Miriam for her poem, as her work invariably carries a creative spark that ignites my own.
